Crest of Ryer Martial Arts Academy

Ryer Martial Arts Academy began as a student organization at the University of Pittsburgh called the United Parker's Kenpo Club.  Established in September 2000, the United Parker's Kenpo Club operated using the crest to the right.  The purpose of the club was to establish an American Kenpo program in the Pittsburgh community and share the benefits of this martial art with others.

As the club became more successful, Mr. Joshua Ryer re-organized the club into a full-time martial arts school in March of 2004.  At the outset, the school continued to operate using the United Parker's Kenpo name and crest.  However, over time the school evolved to welcome people with many martial interests.  The instructors became more well-rounded and diversified their instruction into several martial art disciplines.

With all of the change, the purpose of the school evolved.  So in December 2007; the school was renamed to Ryer Martial Arts Academy and adopted a new crest.

The shape of the diamond has always represented the school.  In the original United Parker's Kenpo crest one should see the shape of a diamond with the shape of the Kenpo ax in the middle.

The diamond was used based off a saying in Senior Grandmaster Ed Parker's volume one of Infinite Insights Into Kenpo where he states that Kenpo, "...was a diamond in the rough waiting to be cut and polished to bring forth its true luster and value."

Now the diamond represents the school in even more ways as we strive to become more multi-faceted and deliver the highest quality martial arts.
